Bunded Fuel Tank

A bunded fuel tank is a legal requirement when storing fuel in most cases. New EU legislation states that a bunded fuel tank must be used to store anything over 200 litres on commercial property or, for domestic use the limit is 3500 litres. However, even when storing very small amounts of fuel a bunded fuel tank is the safest option.

A bunded fuel tank houses a fuel tank, within a tank. This outer tank is often referred to as ‘the bund’. Using this system a bunded fuel tank provides greater protection for the fuel than other fuel storage devices. If the inner tank, of a bunded fuel tank, becomes compromised the bund will contain a leak and prevent any wastage.

The benefits of a bunded fuel tank then, are two fold. Avoiding wastage is important, but equally important is the prevention of fuel spillage. Fuel spillage can be dangerous and environmentally disastrous – a bunded fuel tank prevents this.
