UK Bunded Fuel Tanks

Fuel Storage for the Oil and Power Sectors

In the power generation and energy sectors, resilience is the only metric that matters. Whether you are managing a data centre, a standby power facility, or an oil distribution hub, fuel supply failure is not an option. A generator that fails to start due to fuel starvation or contamination can result in catastrophic financial loss and reputational damage.

At UK Bunded Fuel Tanks, we engineer high-capacity, steel fuel storage systems designed to guarantee continuity. Manufactured in the UK to BS 799-5 standards, our tanks provide the secure, compliant infrastructure required to keep the lights on.

The Problem: Vulnerabilities in Standard Storage

The demands of the power industry far exceed the capabilities of standard commercial fuel tanks. Off-the-shelf solutions rarely address the specific risks associated with long-term fuel storage for critical backup systems.

Fuel Degradation and "Diesel Bug"

Backup generators may sit idle for months. In standard tanks without filtration circulation, diesel degrades. Water condensation leads to microbial growth (diesel bug), which blocks filters and injectors the moment the generator is called upon to run. A tank without fuel management capabilities is a single point of failure.

Inadequate Flow Rates

Megawatt-class generators consume vast quantities of fuel under load. Undersized outlet feeds and standard gravity piping often fail to deliver the required flow rate, starving the engine and causing it to cut out under load.

Regulatory and Insurance Pressure

High-volume fuel storage attracts intense scrutiny from the Environment Agency and insurance auditors. Plastic tanks or single-skin steel units simply do not meet the fire resistance or structural integrity standards required for critical infrastructure sites.

The Bespoke Solution: Heavy Engineering for High Stakes

We do not just supply tanks; we engineer complete fuel management ecosystems. By choosing a Bespoke Steel Tank, you ensure your fuel infrastructure is as robust as the generators it serves.

1. High-Capacity Bulk Storage

We manufacture tanks up to 100,000 litres and can interlink multiple units to create vast fuel farms. This ensures you have sufficient runtime—be it 24, 48, or 72 hours—to ride out prolonged grid outages without needing immediate replenishment.

2. Integrated Fuel Polishing

To combat diesel bug, we integrate automated fuel polishing systems directly into the tank design. These systems circulate and filter the fuel periodically, removing water and sediment to ensure the diesel is pristine and ready for combustion at a moment's notice.

3. Complex Pipework Integration

We design tanks with specific flow and return connections to suit your engine's requirements. We can include twin-pump sets, duplex filters, and BMS (Building Management System) integration, allowing your central control room to monitor fuel levels and pump status in real time.

Key Features for the Power Industry

  • Fire Resistance: Constructed entirely from steel, our tanks offer superior fire protection compared to plastic, essential for sites with strict safety cases.
  • Walk-in Machinery Housings: We can build large, walk-in cabinets attached to the tank to house pumps, polishers, and switchgear, protecting them from the elements and providing a secure maintenance environment.
  • Duplex Pumping Systems: "Duty and Standby" pump configurations ensure that if one pump fails, the secondary unit takes over immediately, guaranteeing uninterrupted fuel flow.
  • Safety Gantries and Ladders: For large bulk tanks, we install OSHA-compliant access ladders and gantries to allow safe maintenance and inspection of top-mounted equipment.
  • Double-Skinned Pipework: We can supply and advise on double-skinned (pipe-in-pipe) supply lines to ensure full environmental compliance from the tank to the generator inlet.

Compliance & Regulations: Critical Infrastructure Standards

Our manufacturing process is designed to withstand the most rigorous audits.

BS 799-5 and BS 799-5:2010 (Type J/K)

We manufacture strictly to British Standards for oil storage tanks. This covers plate thickness, welding procedures, and pressure testing, providing the certification required for insurance validation.

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations

For high-volume storage, compliance is mandatory. Our tanks feature 110% bund capacity and can be fitted with audible and visual bund alarms to detect any breach in the inner vessel immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions (Construction Fuel Storage)

Frequently Asked Questions (Power & Energy Storage)

Do you provide tanks for data centres?
Yes. We supply bespoke tanks for data centres across the UK, focusing on redundancy, fuel polishing, and remote monitoring to ensure "five nines" reliability.

Can you install fuel polishing on existing tanks?
While we primarily manufacture new tanks with integrated polishing, we can design the tank with the necessary ports for you to retrofit third-party polishing units, or we can supply the tank pre-fitted with the equipment.

What is the maximum capacity you can manufacture?
We manufacture single units up to roughly 200,000 litres depending on transport logistics. We can create fuel farms with effectively unlimited capacity.

Do your tanks integrate with Building Management Systems (BMS)?
Yes. We can fit 4-20mA hydrostatic gauges and high/low-level probes that output data directly to your BMS, allowing for centralised monitoring of fuel stocks and leak detection.
